Painting Session in Needlepoint

It may not occur to you how long it takes me to hand paint one of my designs. I have taken the time to photograph an entire painting session to show you. At the top of each picture I have recorded on masking tape the running time of this painting session. It is my hope this segment helps you understand the time involved in hand painting a stitch painted canvas.

This photo shows three and one half hours of hand painting so far. I have painted all the yellows and greens of the sweet peas. What you don't see above is the four hours designing this composition before I apply the first strokes of color! The canvas size is 7x 10 inches. Now I am at the end of my second day of painting, seven and one half hours and counting! It's at this point that I think I have only 20-30 minutes left. Wishful thinking! The ribbons and two flower petals have yet to be painted. Next is the tonal readjustments in the values.  At midday on the third day the painting is done. I have yet to enter the invoice into my computer, package the design and go to the post office to ship. The total design and painting time: 25.5 hours! It is a very labor intensive work painting a stitch painted canvas! I am sure you agree!
